DAY 16 of 30 FASHION CODES IN 30 DAYS

ree

I don’t know how we’re already at Day 16, but I’m so glad this FASHION CODE is involved. Whatever holiday you and your crew are to celebrate, you really can’t go wrong with selecting the best fabric for the occasion, after all fine fabrics are your friend. Oyy. Let’s do this.

Fabric— The heart and soul of any sewing project, it can make or break you (and your new item).

The most important component of a garment is the fabric. It doesn't matter how well crafted the seams of the garment are – if the clothing is made from the wrong fabric, it will not do justice to the design and will look like a disaster.

Cheap fabrics look cheap and they often feel unleap too. But the first time you buy a real silk(or sustainable alternative) top or a pair if pants without the polyester, you know what it’s like to feel fine.

A fabric with more drape will make the skirt float away from your body, contrary to a fabric with a soft drape which will make it fold close to your body. For example, if you want a flowing skirt, you should pick a thin and well-draping fabric, but if you want a more structured skirt, choose a stiff and thick fabric.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FABRIC.

SELECT YOUR PROJECT

There are lots of ways to select your new project, I like to look for inspiration on google or Instagram( yours could differ). Get a good tailor, or if you can sew; create an amazing design.

DOUBLE CHECK THE COLOUR Always double-check the colour. Often the lighting in a store can make a colour look different to how it looks in natural light, so always take the fabric into natural light (or near a window) prior to purchasing. Also, make sure to hold up the fabric to your skin to check how it looks against you if you are making something for yourself. If the fabric is too close to your skin colour it can sometimes not pop very much when turned into a garment .

TEST THE STRETCH

Put the fabrics between your fingers to test the stretch. Most fabrics will have an element of stretch, particularly when pulled on the cross( diagonal against the grain), and this will be useful to understand. Choose fabrics with not much stretch, as these have a more natural wear and fall, but it will all come down to what your are making.

CHECK THE DRAPE

A fabric with more drape will make the skirt float away from your body, contrary to a fabric with a soft drape which will make it fold close to your body. For example, if you want a flowing skirt, you should pick a thin and well-draping fabric, but if you want a more structured skirt, choose a stiff and thick fabric. For the guys, you can‘t compare the fabric of Kafthan to Ankara.

A world of fashion without fabrics is like a train without an engine. That fabric awaits you! Shop for it.
