Monday Memo|Detail No.120|September 16, 2024

Good morning, it's a brand new week and the series continues.

Today we shift our focus to "Serenity—The Present, Embracing What is".

Shall we? Let's do this.

In the whirlwind of daily life, we often find ourselves lost in the race toward the future or caught up in the regrets of the past. We live in a world that glorifies hustle, rewards constant activity, and celebrates future achievements. But in doing so, we overlook the beauty and power of a simpler, more profound state of being—serenity in the present.

Serenity is not just the absence of chaos, nor is it a fleeting moment of peace that we stumble upon during a vacation or a quiet Sunday morning. It is the deep and enduring calm that arises when we fully embrace the present moment, accepting life as it unfolds without resistance or judgment.

In the present, we let go of the need to control or fix everything around us. We stop measuring our worth by how much we’ve done or how far we’ve come. Instead, we immerse ourselves in the now, recognizing that this moment — imperfect as it may be — is exactly where we are meant to be.

It’s easy to say “be present,” but in reality, it can feel like one of the hardest things to do. The mind is always buzzing, dragging us toward unfinished to-do lists, future goals, or past mistakes. It’s as if we are hardwired to live anywhere but in the moment. This constant tug between what was and what will be robs us of the present's gift — serenity.

Fear of the unknown, our attachment to outcomes, and the belief that happiness lies just around the corner often keep us from truly experiencing what is in front of us. But here’s the thing: the future may be uncertain, and the past is gone. The only moment that’s real, the only moment we can truly live, is "right now".

How Do We Embrace What Is?

  1. Acceptance

The first step to finding serenity is acceptance. This doesn’t mean giving up or resigning to circumstances beyond our control, but rather acknowledging that things are as they are. Life is full of highs and lows, successes and setbacks. The more we resist the difficult moments, the more we amplify our own suffering. Accepting things as they are allows us to find peace even in the face of adversity.

2. Letting Go of Control

Control is an illusion. We can plan, strive, and work hard, but there will always be things beyond our reach. Embracing the present means letting go of the need to control every aspect of life. By releasing this need, we allow ourselves to experience the flow of life naturally and respond to it with a sense of calm and clarity.

3. Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about bringing our full attention to the present moment. It’s about noticing the small details — the warmth of the sun on our skin, the taste of food, the sound of laughter. When we practice mindfulness, we quiet the noise of our thoughts and become fully engaged with the here and now.

4. Gratitude for What Is

Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we already have. When we pause to appreciate the present — even if it’s imperfect — we cultivate a sense of contentment. There’s power in recognizing the beauty in everyday moments: a conversation with a friend, the peacefulness of a morning walk, or simply the ability to breathe and exist.

5. Self-Compassion

Embracing the present also means embracing ourselves, flaws and all. We often judge ourselves harshly, believing we should be somewhere else in life or someone else entirely. Serenity comes when we learn to treat ourselves with kindness, offering the same grace we would to a loved one.

The Power of Now

The present is the only place where life truly happens. It’s where joy, love, and connection exist. When we anchor ourselves in the now, we stop chasing external validation or future outcomes and begin to experience the richness of life as it is. In this space, we discover that serenity isn’t something we find; it’s something we allow ourselves to feel.

In a world that’s constantly urging us to do more, be more, and achieve more, choosing serenity might feel counterintuitive. But it is in the stillness of the present that we uncover the peace we’ve been searching for all along. Embrace what is, and you may just find that it’s more than enough.

When you embrace a challenge, you are saying, "This is part of my journey, and I will learn from it." This mindset helps keep you grounded in the present. You’re not living in fear of what’s to come or dwelling on what’s already passed. You’re here, now, facing the moment head-on. Sometimes, progress may feel slow, and that’s okay. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.

In moments of stillness, when you take a deep breath and allow yourself to just be, you open the door to serenity. It’s not about perfection, and it’s not about escape. It’s about surrendering to the beauty of now — a beauty that has always been within reach.

In moments of doubt, remind yourself that progress isn’t always linear. There will be times when you feel like you’re taking two steps forward and one step back. But as long as you keep moving, you’re still moving forward.

Monday will be back.
