DAY 10 of 30 FASHION CODES IN 30 DAYS

ree

As much as we might like it to be, the holiday season isn’t all about being social. Sometimes it’s about being professional too, but no less well-dressed for the occasion. As you’re well aware, DETAILS roots are in professional attire. I have always been lit up and excited by workwear, and I try to pass that along to you in the form of weekly detail and the occasional Instagram reels(detailsarena). Today, I’d like to share a fashion code that translates really well to essentially any professional setting.

Like I mentioned yesterday— dress code is defined as a set of rules with regard to clothing – created out of social perceptions and norms.

It's always fine to break the rules when it brings you joy; and it's also important to be respectful and follow the rules if your job demands a dress code or when you are invited to someone's special day.

If something calls for black tie, don’t show up in red tie. If it calls for plain black dress, don’t go there on florals. If you’re a member of the armed forces – or you wear a required uniform to work – you definitely don’t want to break the rules.

If you’re a junior associate making a presentation to the senior partners at a law firm, wearing shorts and a deep V-neck won’t go over well. Such a stunt may even get you fired.

There’s always some risk when it comes to breaking the rules. You've got to ask yourself whether the risk is worth it. Quite often, it won't be. Knowing when and where to screw the dress code is critical.

Use common sense. If you know your company’s had a bad quarter and there were talks of cutbacks, don't show up to the next meeting in cargo shorts and flip-flops! The last thing you want is to give your boss a reason to fire you when you know he's looking for one.

Those situations are always very predictable. Use your head.

Ladies and gents, If there’s is a dress code, stick to that code.
